What exactly is malabsorption syndrome?

Key vitamins and minerals
The most commonly supplemented nutrients are those that are hardest to absorb or are lost in large amounts.
- Fat-Soluble Vitamins (A, D, E, K): When fat absorption is poor (steatorrhea), these vitamins are malabsorbed along with it. Vitamin D and calcium are especially critical for bone health, as many IBD patients are also on corticosteroids, which can further weaken bones.
- Vitamin B12: This vitamin requires a healthy terminal ileum (the last part of the small intestine) to be absorbed.
