It often starts as a discomfort, maybe after a rich, fatty meal. You might mistake it for indigestion. But then it grows, a sharp, gripping pain in the upper right side of your abdomen, sometimes radiating to your back or shoulder. This, for many, is the first unwelcome introduction to a small, pear-shaped organ they’ve probably never thought about: the gallbladder. It’s a tiny player in your digestive system, but when it’s unhappy, it makes its presence known. The good news is that its health is profoundly linked to what we eat, and understanding how to manage your nutrition can be the key to finding relief and preventing future problems.

What is the gallbladder and what does it do?

Think of your gallbladder as a small, muscular storage pouch tucked just under your liver. Its main job is to store and concentrate a digestive fluid called bile, which is produced by the liver. Bile is essentially your body’s fat-digesting detergent. To cope, the liver produces more cholesterol, which then gets secreted into the bile.     However, if you already have gallstones or cholecystitis, drinking coffee can be a very bad idea. Why? Because it stimulates the gallbladder to contract! If that gallbladder is inflamed or a stone is blocking the exit, that contraction will be extremely painful. This is a classic case of what’s good for prevention can be bad for treatment.
