Health economics helps policymakers design and run efficient healthcare systems by comparing the performance of alternative interventions. Should a health ministry invest in high-technology hospitals or expand immunization programs? Economic evaluation reveals which option delivers greater health improvements per dollar invested.

Consider childhood vaccination programs. Economic analysis demonstrates that vaccines typically rank among the most cost-effective health interventions available. For relatively small upfront costs, vaccination prevents diseases that would otherwise require expensive treatments and cause lifelong disabilities. This evidence has convinced many countries to make vaccination a cornerstone of public health policy.

However, cost-effectiveness alone doesn’t determine all funding decisions. Political considerations, equity concerns, and public values also matter. Many chronic diseases including diabetes, heart disease, and certain cancers have strong links to nutrition. Poor dietary choices impose enormous economic burdens through medical treatment costs and lost productivity. Economic analysis can demonstrate the value of nutrition interventions. Economic models helped governments weigh lockdown costs against lives saved, though these analyses couldn’t capture all the social and psychological dimensions of pandemic policy. This experience highlighted how health economics provides crucial insights while recognizing that some values transcend purely economic calculations.
