In the world of research methods, particularly in nutrition and food science, interviews serve as a vital tool for understanding everything from dietary habits to cultural food practices, making them an indispensable part of any researcher’s toolkit.

What are interviews in research?

At its core, an interview is a qualitative research method that relies on asking questions to collect data. It’s a communication process where the researcher (interviewer) engages with a participant (interviewee) to gather verbal information, typically in a face-to-face setting, though modern technology has expanded this to include phone and video formats as well.

Think of interviews as an oral questionnaire with a personal touch. Structured interviews follow a fixed format with predetermined questions asked in a specific order. Unstructured interviews: Following the conversation

On the opposite end of the spectrum, unstructured interviews provide maximum flexibility. There’s no predetermined set of questions; instead, the conversation flows naturally based on the participant’s responses and the researcher’s curiosity. This approach is particularly useful when exploring new or poorly understood topics.

For example, if you’re researching traditional food preparation methods in a specific community, an unstructured interview lets participants tell their stories in their own way, potentially revealing cultural insights and practices you hadn’t even thought to ask about. This type of interview allows for open-ended exploration and encourages participants to share their experiences freely.

Semi-structured interviews: The best of both worlds

Semi-structured interviews strike a balance between consistency and flexibility. Researchers prepare core questions but remain free to ask follow-up questions and explore tangents that seem important. This format has become particularly popular in qualitative research because it provides depth while maintaining some standardization.

Picture a researcher investigating why people choose certain diets. They might have prepared questions about meal planning and food choices, but when a participant mentions that childhood memories heavily influence their current eating habits, the interviewer can pursue that thread without abandoning their research objectives.

Group interviews and focus groups

Sometimes, the magic happens when multiple voices come together. Group interviews involve several participants discussing a topic simultaneously, allowing researchers to observe how people interact with and influence each other’s ideas. These are especially valuable in nutrition research when studying community food practices or gathering feedback on public health interventions.

The art and science of conducting effective interviews

Building rapport and creating comfort

The success of any interview hinges on the relationship between interviewer and participant. Building rapport and establishing trust allows participants to share openly, providing authentic data rather than socially desirable responses.

Simple actions make a difference: greeting participants warmly, explaining how their privacy will be protected, showing genuine interest in their responses, and maintaining appropriate eye contact. When people feel heard and respected, they’re more likely to share meaningful insights, including sensitive information about topics like disordered eating or food insecurity.

Recording and documenting responses

Capturing interview data accurately is critical. While some researchers take detailed notes during conversations, many prefer using audio or video recorders to ensure nothing is missed. This allows the interviewer to focus fully on the conversation rather than frantically scribbling notes.

However, recording introduces its own considerations. Participants must consent to being recorded, and the presence of recording equipment can sometimes make people self-conscious. Researchers need to balance the benefits of having a complete record with the potential impact on participant comfort.

Why researchers choose interviews for their studies

Despite requiring significant time and effort, interviews remain a cornerstone of qualitative research for compelling reasons.

Depth and richness of data

Interviews excel at capturing nuanced human experiences, offering insights that few other methods can match. When studying something as personal and culturally embedded as food choices, this depth becomes invaluable. A survey might tell you what percentage of people skip breakfast, but an interview reveals why-perhaps due to morning nausea, busy schedules, childhood habits, or cultural practices.

Flexibility and adaptability

The ability to adjust questions, probe deeper into interesting responses, and clarify misunderstandings in real-time gives interviews a dynamic quality. If a participant mentions something unexpected-like using unusual ingredients due to food allergies-the researcher can immediately explore this further rather than wishing they’d included that question in a survey.

Access to diverse populations

Interviews can reach people who might be excluded from other research methods. Those with limited literacy, language barriers, or disabilities that make written surveys challenging can all participate in interviews. This inclusivity is particularly important in nutrition research, where understanding diverse dietary practices across different communities is essential.

Capturing non-verbal communication

Face-to-face interviews offer something written surveys never can: the ability to observe body language, facial expressions, and emotional responses. When discussing sensitive nutrition topics like body image or eating disorders, these non-verbal cues provide context that helps researchers interpret responses more accurately.

Understanding the limitations and challenges

Like any research method, interviews come with inherent challenges that researchers must navigate carefully.

Time and resource intensity

One of the most significant disadvantages is that interviews are time-consuming. Scheduling, conducting, transcribing, and analyzing interviews demands substantial time investment. A single hour-long interview might require three or more hours of additional work for transcription and analysis. For researchers with limited resources, this can restrict how many participants they can include in their study.

Interviewer bias and subjectivity

The personal nature of interviews introduces the risk of bias. An interviewer’s tone, facial expressions, or even the way they phrase follow-up questions can inadvertently influence participants’ responses. This is particularly concerning when studying controversial topics or when interviewers have strong personal views about the research subject.

For instance, social desirability bias occurs when participants adjust their responses to align with what they believe is socially acceptable. Someone might underreport their consumption of unhealthy foods or exaggerate their exercise habits to present themselves in a better light.

Memory limitations and recall issues

Interviews often depend on participants’ ability to accurately remember past experiences. However, human memory is far from perfect. People may forget details, unconsciously reconstruct events, or blend multiple experiences together. When conducting dietary recall interviews, for example, participants might struggle to remember exactly what they ate several days ago, leading to incomplete or inaccurate data.

Limited anonymity

Unlike anonymous surveys, interviews do not provide the same level of anonymity, which can affect participants’ willingness to share openly. This becomes especially problematic when researching sensitive topics like eating disorders, food insecurity, or culturally taboo food practices. Participants might withhold information or modify their responses to avoid judgment.

Challenges with sample size and generalizability

Because interviews are resource-intensive, researchers typically conduct fewer of them compared to surveys. This smaller sample size can limit the generalizability of findings. While the depth of understanding gained from interviews is valuable, researchers cannot always confidently apply their findings to broader populations.

Making the most of interviews in your research

Despite these limitations, interviews remain powerful when used thoughtfully. Successful researchers acknowledge both the strengths and weaknesses of this method, implementing strategies to maximize the former while minimizing the latter.

Training interviewers properly, using interview guides to maintain some consistency while allowing flexibility, triangulating interview data with other research methods, and being transparent about limitations in research reports all help ensure that interviews contribute meaningful insights to scientific understanding.

In food and nutrition research specifically, interviews help us understand not just what people eat, but why they make certain choices, how cultural factors shape dietary practices, and what barriers people face in maintaining healthy eating habits. This human element-the stories, struggles, and successes of real individuals-brings research to life in ways that numbers alone never could.
